The adjustable gastric banding, commonly named the lap band is a newer but well known and efficient surgical weight loss option available today for those who fight obesity. Obesity is a real issue nowadays and the difficulty of moving, even if it is rather uncomfortable is not the biggest problem that obesity causes. It is well known that people with a higher BMI (Body Mass Index), over 35-40 often have to deal with obesity related medical conditions, which are hard to face, including respiratory problems, heart conditions, diabetes, high levels of cholesterol and high blood pressure.
In the past the lap band procedure was available to patients with a BMI of 40 or higher, but now the FDA approved it for people with BMI between 30 and 40 if they suffer from a weight related illness.
The adjustable gastric banding, just like the other available surgical methods are restrictive regarding the food intake. The lap band procedure it is usually performed with the help of a laparoscope, which makes it less invasive than an open surgery.
While the surgery itself the bariatric surgeon places the device called Lap Band®, an adjustable silicone band, around the upper part of the stomach creating this way a small pouch. This system is then connected to a tube which has the access port at the end, and it is placed under the skin. Through this access port the surgeon can adjust the band by injecting with a fine needle saline into the device.
The lap band is a reversible weight loss procedure and it presents low risks for post-op complications. The recovery time with this procedure is approximately 6 weeks; the rate of mortality is 1 in 2000.
Choosing the lap band procedure helps the bariatric patient significantly not only by loosing the weight access but also by improving the weight related conditions the patient faces. With proper nutrition and physical exercises and of course by adopting a healthy lifestyle the results can be maintained on long term and the patient who once felt strange being around his or her fellow beings can now harmoniously reintegrate into society.
