Vital vaccinations
Vaccinations are one of the essential means of prevention of infectious and viral diseases. They protect your child and reduce the risk of epidemics. Some are mandatory, others only recommended. For each vaccine, respect the number of injections and don’t forget callbacks. When and what diseases vaccinate your child? Here are a few answers…
The first month
BCG (Bacille Calmette-Guérin)
Vaccination BCG (vaccine against tuberculosis) is more mandatory for entry into the Community (drop-in Centre, nursery, school, Assistant maternelle…). But it is still shown in exposed children or at risk (Ile-de-France and Guyana, or among those who have stayed or whose parents come from countries or rampant tuberculosis including).
Two months from
Diphtheria – tetanus – polio (DTP)
This mandatory vaccine consists of three injections a month apart. It must be done before 18 months of the child. The first callback is required one year after the third injection, the following will be every five years.
Whooping cough
Vaccination is recommended from two months in three injections a month apart, in association with the DTP and Haemophilus influenzae b. A reminder is to perform one year later, and then between the ages of 11 and 13.
Anti-haemophilus influenzae
This vaccine, which prevents the appearance of certain types of meningitis of the child, is advisable from two months in three injections a month apart. It is often associated with DT Pertussis Polio vaccination. A single callback must be performed, one year after the third injection. It is unnecessary to perform beyond reminders.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B vaccine can be injected two months (except in the case of children born to mother Antigen positive HBs, in which it must be made at birth) in three injections (two injections a month apart)the third 5-12 months after the first. There is a controversy on the eventual (extremely low) risk in adults, for some time of neurological illness associated with this vaccination. This risk exists not in the infant, and the positive effects of the vaccine are such in terms of lives saved that vaccination is strongly recommended in children.
Pneumococcal
Pneumococcus is the first cause of death by community bacterial infection in children less than 2 years, and the first cause of bacterial meningitis. It is recommended to immunize all infants from the age of 2 months (1st 2 months, the 2nd and 3rd injection doing 1 month apart at 3-4 months). The booster dose is administered between 12 and 15 months to ensure long term protection.
